The ever-improving euro-zone received another boost on Monday as France, one of the region’s main powers, announced that unemployment there is down to 8 percent, its lowest in 25 years.
The French national statistics agency Insee said that unemployment fell from 8.1 percent in May to 8 percent in June. The number of jobseekers was down 34,000 to 2.206 million.
This is very good news for the French government who promised to fight unemployment during the election campaign. French president Nicolas Sarkozy has also said the economy is one of his top priorities.
A former politician forecast that unemployment could fall to 7.9 percent by the end of the year.
Meanwhile, the French government continues to implement a number of measures to help boost the economy. Last week, the government’s tax relief package was approved by the Senate, while a study of labour law reforms is to take place this week.
Meanwhile, the number of category 1 jobseekers , who registered with the national unemployment service and are seeking full-time long-term employment, dropped further below the 2 million mark to 1,963,000 from 1,987,000 in May, according to French Finance Ministry data .
While the latest figures are encouraging for the French government, there is some doubt over the accuracy of the figures. In February, Eurostat, which calculates statistics for the European Union, said France’s unemployment rate was 8.8 percent which was significantly higher than the government’s figure.
