The unprecedented growth in airline traffic in recent years began to slow in the first half of this year.
However, growth was still up all around and especially in the Middle East where departures and arrivals were up 18 percent.
The International Air Transport Association revealed that overall, passenger traffic worldwide climbed 6.3 percent between January and June, compared to 6.7 percent in the first half of 2006.
Cargo shipments grew by 2.7 percent in the first half of the year, compared to 5.2 percent a year earlier.
Again, the Middle East showed the strongest growth at 11 percent.
Rising demand has led regional airlines like Qatar Airways, Ethiad Airways and Emirates to launch new routes and increase their fleet significantly.
In all, about 1,800 planes will be bought in the next 18 months.
Many of these will be used to service a fast growing Asian market.
Meanwhile, it has bee revealed that American tourists are no longer holidaying in the Carribean in the same numbers as before.
.Many are choosing new destinations, or just staying at home, as the appeal of idyllic islands like Jamaica, St Lucia and Grenada appears to be waning.
Tourism officials have decided to increase marketing in Europe and Canada in a bid to make up the shortfall.
Heightened security and the fear of terrorism are seen as being the main reasons for the fall off in business from America, which accounts for 60 percent of the market.
